TORONTO (April 13, 2026)—The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) presented its highest honor, the SIR Gold Medal, to Thierry de Baère, MD (posthumously); Scott Craig Goodwin, MD, MBA, FSIR; and Lindsay Machan MD, FSIR; during its Annual Scientific Meeting in Toronto on April 12. These awards acknowledge distinguished and extraordinary service to SIR or to the specialty of interventional radiology. Following the awards ceremony, Andrew Holden, MBChB, EBIR, ONZM, delivered the 2026 Charles T. Dotter Lecture.

Meet the Gold Medal recipients
“These awards celebrate exceptional leaders whose passion, ingenuity and lifelong commitment have helped define and advance the field of interventional radiology. We recognize these honorees for their transformative impact on patient care, groundbreaking research, and dedication to education and service—setting new standards of excellence and inspiring colleagues and future physicians around the world,” said SIR 2025–26 President Robert A. Lookstein, MD, FSIR.

Thierry Jacques de Baère, MD, was head of the interventional radiology unit at Institut Gustave Roussy Cancer Center in Villejuif, France, Europe’s largest cancer center. His clinical work was dedicated to minimal invasive therapy for treatment of liver, lung and kidney tumors, including intra-arterial therapies for primary and secondary liver tumors, and percutaneous ablation of liver tumors and lung tumors. Professor de Baère and his team had also pioneered and investigated preoperative portal vein embolization to hypertrophy unembolized parts of the liver. Read his full biography.

Scott Craig Goodwin, MD, MBA, FSIR, is a past president of SIR and an internationally recognized for being one of the earliest providers pioneering uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). Starting in 1996 his group worked diligently on establishing the indications, safety and efficacy of the procedure and followed with the training/proctoring/advising of hundreds of physicians across the United States and the world so that the procedure would be widely available to women. He was the course director for SIR’s “Uterine Fibroid Embolization–New Advances in Women’s Health Care” national conferences. Read his full biography.

Lindsay Machan MD, FSIR, is an interventional radiologist at Vancouver Hospital and an associate professor in the department of Radiology at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is also an associate member of the department of vascular surgery and the division of urology. During his career, he performed several first-in-human procedures including fluoroscopically guided prostatic stent, removable metallic urethral stent, paclitaxel-coated stent and paclitaxel-coated vascular stent placements. In 2024, he was made an officer in the Order of Canada. Read his full biography.

Meet the 2026 Dr. Charles T. Dotter Lecturer
“The Dotter Lecture more than a talk. It is a recognition of those who embody Dotter’s innovation, courage, and commitment to advancing IR,” said Lookstein. “Professor Holden exemplifies the spirit of Charles Dotter: innovation grounded in purpose, technical mastery paired with curiosity, and a career dedicated not only to advancing the field, but to elevating those around him.”

Andrew Holden, MBChB, FRANZCR, EBIR, ONZM, is the director of Northern Region Interventional Radiology Service and is based at Auckland City Hospital where he co-directs the Vascular Intervention Research Unit. He is also a clinical professor of radiology at the University of Auckland. Dr Holden is a member of the Interventional Society of Australasia (IRSA) and is a past-president of the Asia-Pacific Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (APSCVIR). He holds a European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) diploma and is currently co-chair of the Charing Cross Symposium in London.

Professor Holden is the author of over 160 articles in peer-reviewed journals and five book chapters. He has presented over 700 times at major scientific meetings. His interests include vascular interventional procedures, such as advanced endovascular aneurysm repair techniques and revascularization in claudication and critical limb ischemia. To date, Professor Holden has been involved in over 100 medical device trials, many “first-in-human” and many as principal investigator.

In 2018, Dr Holden was recognized for his contribution to vascular and endovascular intervention by being awarded an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) medal.
