October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month, offering an opportunity to highlight the important role interventional radiology plays in treating and monitoring liver cancer.

VIRTEX includes eight IR-specific quality measures developed by SIR to help participating sites evaluate outcomes and identify opportunities for quality improvement. One of these measures looks at the LI-RADS Nonviable Rate for Index Hepatic Carcinoma..

The measure evaluates the percentage of treated hepatic tumors categorized as nonviable on follow-up contrast-enhanced CT or MRI after treatments such as transarterial chemoembolization, Y-90 radioembolization and image-guided ablation. An LR-TR Nonviable designation indicates that no masslike enhancement is present in the treated lesion.

Consistent assessment and documentation of treatment response can support clearer communication across the care team while giving participating VIRTEX sites meaningful data for quality improvement and benchmarking.

By bringing standardized reporting, follow-up data, and IR-specific quality measures together, VIRTEX is helping build a stronger foundation for understanding treatment outcomes and improving the quality of liver cancer care.
