SIR, as a member of the Alliance of Specialty Medicine, submitted comments to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) asking it to rescind its proposed “Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance” rule, which would expand political oversight of grants to ensure grants align with Trump Administration priorities. The Alliance of Specialty Medicine raised concerns that the rule could stymie the conduct of medical research in the United States, harm patient access to care, weaken the integrity of the scientific peer review process, discourage national and international scientific collaboration, and interfere with scientific journal independence.

“The Alliance believes it is absolutely critical that decisions regarding the allocation of federal funds are guided by science rather than political considerations. We strongly encourage OMB to withdraw the rule and collaborate with the research community to come up with policies that improve transparency and reduce burden while preserving the role of the scientific community,” the letter said.
