In January, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) implemented the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction (WISeR) model, which introduces the use of artificial intelligence for prior authorization in select states. The model includes procedures such as vertebral augmentation, an established interventional radiology therapy supported by strong clinical evidence demonstrating improved patient outcomes and survival benefits.
SIR has raised significant concerns regarding the impact of WISeR on timely patient access to care and continues to advocate for policies that protect evidence-based, minimally invasive treatments. To better understand the real-world impact of this model, SIR has launched a member survey. We encourage members to share their experiences to help inform ongoing advocacy efforts and ensure patient access to appropriate, life-improving care.
