The American Urological Association (AUA) has published new guidance on the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which strengthened its recommendations for prostatic artery embolization (PAE) as a treatment option for patients with prostates greater than or equal to 50 cc. The new guideline cited the growing body of evidence in support of PAE’s efficacy in this patient population in rating the strength of the evidence at Grade B. The guideline also encouraged a multispecialty approach to delivering PAE treatment, noting that an IR should perform the procedure to prevent complication given the complexity of the vasculature. The AUA guideline was written by a multispecialty team that included interventional radiology.
