Dr. David Mittelstein is currently a PGY‑4/R3 at UC San Diego in the NIH T32‑funded IR Integrated Research Pathway. He maintains an active research portfolio with multiple ongoing projects and several publications in the field of interventional radiology. Clinically, he is outstanding—an excellent physician and among the strongest diagnostic radiologists in his DR/IR class.

He serves as the co‑chair of the RFS Recruitment Committee. He designed and conducted a survey of SIR resident members, examining IR resident attrition and presented the results at the annual APDIR Education Meeting. His presentation, “Resident Perspectives and Recommendations on Integrated IR Residency Drop‑Out” offered program directors valuable insights into the factors influencing trainee attrition and opportunities for improvement. The survey findings are now being actively utilized by both APDIR and the SIR Education Committee to inform ongoing initiatives.

The RFS Clinical Advancement Award recognizes one exceptional resident each year who demonstrates a strong commitment to expanding their clinical skills, dedication to patient care and contributions to interventional radiology during their early postgraduate training.
