Life-changing medicine. Breathrough technology. Limitless potential.
Change agents. Interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive treatment.
For more than four decades, interventional radiologists have been providing innovative care for patients. Along the way, we’ve never stopped defining the future of medicine and adapting to the ever-evolving healthcare landscape.
In the 1960s, interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive treatment, which reaches the source of a medical problem through a tiny incision to deliver a precise, targeted treatment.
Today, we continue to lead the way in using image-guided therapies to solve the toughest medical problems—with less risk and minimal pain for patients.
We are champions of minimally-invasive treatments for virtually every part of the body.
We have transformed the treatment of numerous diseases and conditions—and have made the previously impossible possible.
We are revolutionizing medicine with the development of groundbreaking tools, technologies, and techniques.
We are forever guided by the inspiration and promise of interventional radiology's limitless potential to make patients’ lives better.
Shifting the Paradigm
Initially, IR procedures were primarily used to treat vascular disease less invasively. Thanks to a steady stream of IR innovation, minimally invasive techniques are now the treatment of choice for a vast array of diseases and conditions—including cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, uterine fibroids, biliary disease, urologic problems and many other complex medical issues.
Simply put, our culture of continuous innovation has led to development of targeted treatments for virtually every organ system in the body. Ideas and inventions created by interventional radiologists are now used routinely across all fields of medicine.
IR physicians have not only created breakthrough techniques, but also the tools and technologies to perform them: guide wires, catheters, stents and much more.
What’s the outcome of this innovation? Treatments are easier. Complex procedures are done through a tiny incision. Patients go home the same day. People feel better.

The number of inventions created by interventional radiologists is impressive. A recent study of patent fillings and applications at the United States Patent and Trademark Organization (USPTO) and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) found that 457 members of the Society for Interventional Radiology hold 2,492 patents or patent filings.
