Independent residency ERAS application checklist

Preparing to apply for the independent IR residency?  Here are some final tips as you submit your match application for the 2020 independent IR residency match.

The Association of Program Directors in Interventional Radiology (APDIR) requests independent applicants adhere to the following guidelines when completing their 2020 match ERAS application.

Non-ESIR Applicants (currently not accepted into an ACGME approved ESIR curriculum)

  1. Select only one training track per program. Training tracks represent your current ESIR status, not specific positions within independent programs.
    • If you expect to be accepted into an ACGME approved ESIR curriculum after you apply for the independent IR residency (i.e., your DR program’s ESIR curriculum won’t be reviewed until January 2020, etc.), use these guidelines to apply for programs:
      1. For programs accepting both ESIR and Non-ESIR applicants: apply through the Non-ESIR Applicant track (because this is you current ESIR status). Include information about your expected future ESIR acceptance in your personal statement, so program directors know you will likely complete an ESIR curriculum.
      2. For programs only accepting ESIR applicants: apply through the ESIR Applicant track (since this is the only track offered). Include information about your expected future ESIR acceptance in your personal statement, so program directors know you are currently non-ESIR but will likely complete an ESIR curriculum.

ESIR Applicants (currently accepted into an ACGME approved ESIR curriculum)

  1. Include a paragraph in your personal statement describing your expected ESIR experience. This paragraph should include the following information:
    • A statement that you are selected for ESIR
    • Your expected number of procedures, including a brief description of procedure mix
    • The IR related rotations you expect to complete

  1. Include an ESIR Applicant Diagnostic Radiology Program Director Standardized Letter of Recommendation as one of your four allowed letters of recommendation submitted with your application. The template for the letter can be downloaded here: ESIR letter template. Applicants should give the standardized letter template to their diagnostic radiology program director who must complete all four sections before providing the letter to ERAS (Non-ESIR applicants do not use the standardized letter)The standardized letter includes four sections:
    • Applicant and program director data
    • Diagnostic radiology program director letter of recommendation
    • Block training diagram for R1-R4 years
    • Diagnostic radiology program director ESIR acceptance statement

  1. Select only one training track per program. Training tracks represent your current ESIR status, not specific positions within independent programs.
    • If a program is offering both training tracks and you are willing to train for two years, only select "ESIR Applicant." Include this information in your personal statement.
    • If a program is only offering the Non-ESIR Applicant track and you are willing to train for 2 years, you may apply to this program.
