Advocacy and Outreach

Meet a SIRPAC donor who is making a difference.

Bill Majdalany, MD

SIRPAC's strength lies behind member involvement. Our members not only generously contribute to the society's political action committee, but they are often actively involved in our efforts to spread the voice of interventional radiology to Capitol Hill. SIRPAC frequently recognizes donors who make a difference to SIR and SIRPAC in the hopes that after learning their stories will inspire others to help spread the message.

When it came to SIR advocacy and SIRPAC, Dr. Bill Majdalany was unaware and even skeptical of the benefits of becoming involved., “Over the last few years I would notice occasional emails or announcements about SIRPAC and frankly never paid much attention—I was too busy in training, studying for boards and then transitioning into my first job,” he said.

Then, Dr. Majdalany heard about and applied to participate in the SIR Grassroots Leadership Program. Each year, this two-day program brings SIR volunteers to Washington D.C. to learn more about the advocacy process and affords them the opportunity to engage with members of Congress, not only on Capitol Hill, but also in private settings for invaluable face-to-face interaction . As one of 14 participants in this past year’s program, Dr. Majdalany experienced, firsthand, what it meant to become an SIR advocate and quickly learned the value of advocating on behalf of SIR and the specialty.

“I honestly wasn’t sure what type of difference, if any, that my participation would make. I left with a completely different outlook! This was a wonderful opportunity and frankly eye-opening, galvanizing and fun. It clearly is a long game to accomplish goals in D.C. I learned that it takes persistent efforts over many encounters, meetings and even years, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Dr. Majdalany took this newfound passion for IR advocacy home with him to the University of Michigan, hoping to continue his role as an SIR advocate. He is in the process of setting up a site visit with his local representative and has made plans to come back to Capitol Hill to continue to be an ambassador for SIR.

First time SIRPAC donor and newly-minted Senate level contributor, Dr. Majdalany says, “Ultimately, we should all agree that there is no better organization than SIR to represent interventional radiology. Equally, there is no better organization than SIRPAC to directly advocate for interventional radiology. Join me in giving back to advocate for our new IR residency and the best medical specialty. I hope you choose to volunteer, organize, or donate!”
