Y90: Are YoU Ready?

Feb. 10-13, 2011
FireSky Resort and Spa
4925 N. Scottsdale Road
Scottsdale, Ariz.

Percutaneous, minimally invasive techniques are increasingly important in the management of solid organ malignancies. Concepts regarding patient selection, best approaches, potential synergies and sequencing of adjuvant therapy are rapidly evolving.

Transarterial brachytherapy represents one of the newest breakthrough therapeutic approaches. While in some ways the delivery is similar to existing transarterial therapies, expert practice also requires mastery of relevant aspects of radiation biology, dosimetry, radiation safety, embolotherapy and clinical office management. One must understand the role of yttrium-90 in the context of available alternatives and emerging surgical and medical treatment strategies. With growing validation of the efficacy of these treatments, it is incumbent on interventional radiologists interested in leading Y90 treatment teams to ensure that they are adequately prepared.

Please Note: Registration Closed; Invitation to Participate in Y90 Stakeholders Reception

As of Jan. 13, registration for Y90: Are YoU Ready? is closed. Stay tuned for information on SIR's Y90: Are YoU Ready? meeting to be held in 2012.

To receive an invitation to the Y90 Stakeholders Reception, which will take place at SIR's Annual Scientific Meeting March 26-31 in Chicago, please contact Molly Astudillo, SIR research and grant associate.

This reception will be led by Y90: Are YoU Ready? program coordinator Matthew S. Johnson, M.D., FSIR -- along with Y90: Are YoU Ready? program coordinators Brian F. Stainken, M.D., FSIR, and Riad Salem, M.D., MBA, FSIR -- who will be building advocacy for Y90 usage and AU status and discussing the future of Y90 and how interventional radiology plans to get there.

Course Description

This three-and-a-half-day course, designed with lectures, panel discussions, case scenarios and hands-on workshops, will offer the most in-depth, comprehensive and challenging curriculum available for clinical teams interested in initiating or developing their practice in this exciting aspect of interventional oncology.

This intensive course incorporates the requisite training and testing for official SIR validation of the IR attendee as qualified to apply for Authorized User (AU) status for intra-arterial Y90 in the treatment of hepatic malignancies.*

*Please note: Registrants are reminded that the criteria for Authorized User status vary significantly between individual states and hospitals. SIR cannot guarantee that successful completion of the program and society validation will be accepted for individual AU endorsement.

Target Audience

This course will provide focused educational opportunities for interventional radiologists, trainees, researchers and medical and radiation oncologists as well as IR technologists and nurses. SIR encourages all fellows-in-training to attend this course. There is a reduced fee for fellows-in-training.

Educational Credit

SIR is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide medical education for physicians. SIR designates this live activity for a maximum of 26 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This program has been approved by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) for 25.5 Contact Hours, Synergy CERP Category A, File number 00017063.

This activity is approved for credit by ASRT for Category A/A+ CE credit. To receive this credit, you must sign in at the registration desk every morning.

Course Educational Objectives

  • Describe the theoretical basis, history and development of hepatic artery radioembolization devices
  • Compare and contrast current and future device platforms
  • Discuss the current algorithms and outcomes for treatment of primary and secondary hepatic malignancies inclusive of surgical, medical and transarterial therapies and explore the ideal sequencing of radioembolization in those algorithms
  • Explore trends in patient selection and outcome prediction and discuss the relative importance of cancer vs. cirrhosis, age vs. performance status and imaging vs. physical examination
  • Review information on the treatment algorithm, the rationale for the two-stage approach, device delivery strategies and microcatheters, coiling and embolization techniques and describe issues in postprocedural care and follow-up
  • Review the economics of cancer care: is this treatment worth the cost?
  • Describe best practice in Y90 radiation safety and dose management
  • llustrate models for optimal multidisciplinary management to the patient with primary or secondary hepatic malignancy and discuss elements of optimal care, including interventional oncology clinic, multispecialty clinics and case conferences

Additional Authorized User (AU) Track Course Objectives

Members of the Y90 Program Committee have identified specific sessions with an AU icon that all interventional radiologists are required to attend if seeking SIR's AU endorsement.

  • Describe advanced radiation physics and various methods of calculation of dosimetry and how they vary between available platforms
  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of Y90 administration procedure, including familiarity with both available administration systems
  • Describe responsibilities and significance of AU status in the comprehensive management of radioembolization and identify the importance of a robust radiation safety program
  • Identify state and institutional requirements for becoming an AU and demonstrate comprehension of the elements and significance of a robust radiation safety program as it relates to intra-arterial Y90 therapy
  • Demonstrate hands-on advanced microcatheterization and embolization skills pertinent to device delivery
  • Discuss appropriate follow-up and patient prognosis after radioembolization

Additional Information

Bring Your Laptop
A digital syllabus will be provided to each participant that allows note-taking during lectures. Please remember to bring your power cord.

Session Assessments
To highlight the key topics presented in each session, a session assessment will be given via audience response system (ARS) keypads at the end of each session. An ARS keypad will be issued with check-in at registration. Attendees will be expected to keep and use this keypad throughout the course to track session assessment answers. The purpose of the assessment is to reinforce the key points made throughout the course and for attendees to assess themselves.

On completion of this course, a cumulative session assessment will be given to document mastery of the topics learned. This final assessment will also be given via ARS keypads. Attendees' answers to these questions will be graded, with subsequent recognition of accomplishment. The cumulative session assessment will be offered on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011.

Online Reference Material
In addition to attending the course, you are encouraged to view the suggested articles on Y90 that are posted in the SIR Learning Center at http://learn.SIRweb.org. The purpose of reviewing the articles is to become familiar with the embolization techniques, dosimetery and the potential complications of chemoembolization. More information regarding the articles will be emailed to registrants as the meeting approaches.
